Profit & Loss reporting is one of the most valuable ways for businesses to track performance — but it often starts with messy, unstructured data. Turning that into a clear, usable dashboard can take hours of manual work every time new figures arrive.

I wanted to show how Excel’s built-in tools — specifically Power Query and VBA — can work together to clean data, automate updates, and present results in a simple P&L dashboard.

The Challenge

Raw credit and sales data usually arrives in a format that isn’t ready for reporting. Fields may be inconsistent, structures may not line up, and manual transformation slows everything down.

On top of that, even when data is cleaned, producing a P&L view often means repeating the same steps over and over again — copying, pasting, filtering, and reformatting each reporting cycle.

The question: could Excel handle all of this automatically, from raw data to a finished dashboard, without extra platforms or tools?

The Solution

I built a proof-of-concept demo in Excel that takes raw credit and sales data, processes it, and generates a live P&L dashboard.

Here’s how it works:

Power Query for data cleaning – raw data is imported and normalised automatically.
🛠️ VBA automation – macro routines streamline updates, ensuring the dashboard refreshes with a single click.
📈 Interactive P&L dashboard – a clean summary view that highlights revenue, costs, and net results.
End-to-end workflow – everything handled inside Excel, with no need to move between multiple tools.

Why This Matters

For businesses and analysts, this kind of setup has huge benefits:

  • Time saved: no more repetitive manual cleaning.

  • Accuracy: consistent logic applied every time through Power Query and VBA.

  • Clarity: decision-makers can see results instantly on a dashboard, not buried in tables.

It also demonstrates how far Excel can go when you combine its modern features (like Power Query) with classic automation (VBA). The result is faster, smarter reporting built directly into the tool you already use.

Who This Is For

This demo is designed for:

  • Excel users curious about building dashboards

  • Anyone exploring Power Query and VBA together

  • Businesses that need faster performance reporting
